The Green Bay Packers face a tough two-game stretch to open the season. Week one pits them against their division rival, the Detroit Lions, followed by a matchup with the Washington Commanders in week two. Much of the Packers’ success this season depends on Jordan Love.

“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote.

On Monday, alarms went off regarding Love as he was seen talking to Matt LaFleur and trainers about his left thumb.

“Jordan Love having a lengthy post-practice chat with Matt LaFleur and trainers Bryan Engel and Nate Weir. Seems to have his left thumb wrapped and was flexing it for them. Love wasn’t limited in practice today, for what it’s worth. He did hand off one ball that I saw with his right hand instead of his left that he’d normally hand off with his left,” posted The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

On Tuesday morning, GM Brian Gutekunst announced that Love would have a small procedure but would be ready for week one. However, there is some concern that Green Bay might have to change their entire scheme when Love returns.

“Does it limit under center snaps & force GB to go shotgun/pistol only which could significantly change the offense,” Packers reporter Andy Herman wrote.

This wouldn’t be ideal, but if Love isn’t comfortable while recovering from his injury, it might be a move LaFleur has to make. Injuries are starting to pile up for the Packers, which isn’t great with the regular season looming. The hope is that Love won’t be rusty when he returns from the procedure.
