3 observations from New York Jets' first joint practice with the Giants

A few quick takeaways from the Jets' first joint practice with the Giants.

The New York Jets continued their training camp and preseason with a twist on Tuesday.

The 13th day of summer practices was a joint workout with the New York Giants, the Jets' cross-town rival. The workout was held ahead of the two sides doing battle this upcoming weekend in both of their second preseason games.

With that, here are three quick observations of the Jets-Giants first day of joint practices:

Jermaine returns

New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson (11) exits the field after an injury during the third quarter against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024.

Rookie tight end Mason Taylor returned to practice and had another good showing with the offense. The injury news outshining Taylor is Jermaine Johnson. He took part in his first practice since injuring his Achilles 11 months ago and since being removed from the PUP list. Johnson was a very welcomed sight.

Offense controls to roll early

The Jets offense kept some momentum going from their preseason win over the Green Bay Packers... at least early on. Quarterback Justin Fields reportedly completed his first four or five passes during team drills. However, the Giants' impressive defensive line eventually did slow things down for the Jets offense.

Defense mostly controls the day

The Athletic noted that the Jets defense also had a positive showing against the Giants, perhaps even more so than the offense. Aside from a poor spell in the red zone when Giants quarterback Justin Fields completed a few red zone touchdowns in tight passing windows, the Jets defense reportedly thrived. The likes of Micheal Clemons and Jay Tufele played well on the defensive line with sacks.
