Running back transfer Jaylan Knighton won’t be playing for the West Virginia football team this year according to head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Knighton committed to the Mountaineers in late April after stops at both SMU and Miami but had not practiced with the team due to an eligibility issue which was revealed by Rodriguez.

Rodriguez confirmed that Knighton is no longer with the football team at his Wednesday press conference due to an academic issue with one class.

“We really liked him and thought he was a good player but that one issue came up and that was a surprise to everybody so he won’t be playing this year,” Rodriguez said.

The redshirt senior had been listed on the roster throughout fall camp, but was removed Tuesday as WVSports.com reported to our premium subscribers

The former four-star prospect was limited to just 43 yards on 12 carries and had 4 catches for 42 yards in a season shortened to just three games in 2024 due to injury but rushed for 745 yards and 7 touchdowns and also made 13 catches for 89 yards and a score the previous year.

The Florida native started his career at Miami and appeared in 27 games and rushed for 1,193 yards and 10 touchdowns during that time. Knighton has one season of eligibility remaining in his college career.

West Virginia now has six running backs on the roster with junior Jahiem White, redshirt junior Kannon Katzer, sophomore Cyncir Bowers, sophomore Clay Ash, redshirt freshman Diore Hubbard and redshirt senior Tye Edwards. But Edwards is currently awaiting approval to play this season and hasn’t practiced.

The Mountaineers are expected to have added redshirt freshman Andre Devine.
