Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. Over a storied 15-season NBA career, he won six championships with the Chicago Bulls, claimed five MVP awards, made 14 All-Star appearances, and became the embodiment of competitiveness and excellence. Known for his relentless drive and unmatched will to win, Jordan built a reputation for delivering in the biggest moments, rarely allowing an opponent to outwork or outlast him.

That competitive fire didn’t fade when he retired from the NBA. Jordan has taken that same passion into ventures off the court, including golf, NASCAR ownership, and even fishing. However, while Jordan continues to be the symbol of what it means to be a champion, the 62-year-old legend suffered a rare loss over the weekend.

Michael Jordan Falls Short of Top Prize at White Marlin Open

Over the weekend, Jordan and his crew battled for days against some of the best anglers in the world at the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland. The White Marlin Open is among the most prestigious fishing tournaments in the world, attracting hundreds of boats and millions in prize money.

Aboard his custom yacht Catch 23, Jordan and his crew battled for days against some of the best anglers in the world. His team hooked a 71-pound white marlin, a good catch that earned them a $400,000 payout.

However, despite their impressive effort, they fell just short of the top prize, which went to Dan Gough, a local fisherman. Gough and his crew landed a 72-pound marlin aboard the Billfisher,  earning a whopping $3.9 million. The competition, delayed and extended due to weather, saw over 200 boats head out on the final day in a last push for victory.

For Jordan, falling short after a long weekend of hard-fought angling may be one of the rare times he has felt the sting of defeat.

Michael Jordan Set to Return to NBA on NBC

In May, NBC announced that Michael Jordan will join its NBA coverage as a special contributor for the 2025-26 season, marking his first broadcasting role since retiring. While his role is not fully detailed at the moment, it is set to include taped analysis segments for pregame and halftime shows, with potential for appearances during major events, per CNBC’s Alex Sherman. 

NBC’s 11-year deal with the NBA and WNBA, starting in October 2025, features exclusive Monday night games on Peacock, Tuesday doubleheaders, and Sunday Night Basketball from January 2026. Jordan joins a star-studded team, including Reggie Miller, Jamal Crawford, Carmelo Anthony, and Tracy McGrady.
