Injury issues at the quarterback position have been a running theme for the Cleveland Browns during training camp. Rookie Shedeur Sanders is the latest, dealing with an issue after making his preseason debut. On Wednesday, Sanders was held out of practice out of caution.
The Browns have admitted it’s an oblique bothering Sanders. However, which side or how serious the injury is has not been fully revealed. Former NFL doctor David Chao gave his breakdown on the situation, saying Sanders might be playing if the regular season were currently ongoing.
“Browns QB Sheduer Sanders has an oblique strain,” Choa said via X. “We do not know which side or the severity. If this were the regular season, he would likely play through it. Here’s my breakdown of what we know so far.”
Cleveland has another preseason game scheduled for Saturday, going up against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanders has been labeled as “unlikely” to play by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Browns will have a few other options available to them at quarterback.
Whether or not Sanders winds up being the team’s starting quarterback early in the regular season, we will have to wait and see. Choao believes somebody with an oblique would play through this injury if the lights were fully on. Maybe the oblique will play a role in deciding who the Browns ultimately decide to go with for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
More on Shedeur Sanders being held out of practice
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders reportedly suffered an oblique injury while throwing during Wednesday’s preseason practice and was held out the remainder of the session, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The injury comes just days after Sanders had a breakout performance in his first start as a professional quarterback, when the 2025 fifth-round pick out of Colorado completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s preseason game against the Panthers. Sanders also tallied 19 rushing yards on four carries.
While the severity of Sanders’ oblique injury isn’t clear yet, the lost of valuable practice reps could be viewed as a detriment to any progress made in last week’s preseason game. Sanders continues to battle for opportunities in the Browns’ loaded quarterback room that also includes veterans Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and newly-signed Tyler Huntley, as well as fellow rookie and third-round pick Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon.
