North Carolina begins its national title defense on Thursday, as it travels to Knoxville to battle Tennessee in the season-opening match.
Once again, the Tar Heels are the team to beat in the college women's soccer landscape. North Carolina captured the program's 23rd national championship — and first since 2012 — last season, and now it vies to become the NCAA's first repeat champion since it accomplished the feat in 2008-09.
The Tar Heels return a key nucleus of players, headlined by senior Kate Faasse, who won the MAC Hermann Trophy as the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Year. Last year, Faasse led the nation with 20 goals scored, while she finished second in total points with 44.
Tennessee gets the first crack at slowing down Faasse, and it'll be a stiff test for the Lady Volunteers. The program has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in four consecutive seasons, but it bowed out in the first round of last year's tournament.
