It’s been another summer of big spending in the Premier League. While the division’s ‘Big Six’ often take the headlines when it comes to transfers, there’s been plenty of exciting business done elsewhere.
Ahead of the opening weekend, we’ve picked out five of the most exciting non-Big Six transfers.
The most exciting non-Big Six Premier League transfers this summer
Evann Guessand – Aston Villa
After the loan moves of Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio were not made permanent, Aston Villa entered the market for reinforcements. Unai Emery’s side secured a deal for Evann Guessand from Nice, investing around £26m in the Ivorian.
Guessand starred in Ligue 1 last season, where he scored 12 goals and added eight assists. A move from centre-forward to a more right-sided role brought the best in the 24-year-old, who will provide The Villans with a multi-functional forward threat.
Guessand was the second-most fouled player in Ligue 1 last season. He could form a formidable ball-carrying option alongside Morgan Rogers.
Charalampos Kostoulas – Brighton
The Brighton recruitment model is clear. Sign emerging talent, nurture them at the Amex Stadium, and either reap the rewards or sell on for huge profit. The Seagulls sold Joao Pedro to Chelsea this summer but have reinforced with Charalampos Kostoulas in attack.

The 18-year-old scored seven goals in 34 games during a breakout season at Olympiacos last term, having formed part of the club’s youth side that upset the odds to win the UEFA Youth League in 2023/24. He’s already netted twice in two appearances for Greece at u-21 level and a senior call-up is anticipated in the near future.
Thierno Barry – Everton
Everton’s capture of Thierno Barry can be considered a coup after prising the up-and-coming forward from Champions League qualifiers Villarreal. Signed just last summer from Basel, Barry scored 11 league goals as The Yellow Submarine finished fifth in La Liga.
A 6ft 5in forward with mobility and a desire to stretch defences, he has all the attributes required to thrive in a David Moyes side. Everton have a sketchy recent record when signing strikers, but there’s confidence that the 22-year-old can be a success.
Granit Xhaka – Sunderland
It’s been some time since Sunderland had a player of Granit Xhaka’s quality in their ranks. The Black Cats are back in the Premier League for the first time in nine years and have spent big in pursuit of consolidation. Xhaka has been persuaded to join the project, with the ex-Arsenal midfielder returning to England after two seasons with Bayer Leverkusen.
The Switzerland international was nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2024 after helping Leverkusen to a maiden Bundesliga title success and earned inclusion in Germany’s Team of the Year in successive seasons.

Instantly installed as captain, his leadership will be crucial in the fight for survival.
Jhon Arias – Wolves
Jhon Arias was one of the stars of this summer’s Club World Cup, with the winger’s head-turning performances attracting interest from England. Wolves snapped up the Colombian for a fee in the region of £20m, as Vitor Pereira looks to replace Matheus Cunha’s creativity.
Arias led the Club World Cup for chances created and impressed with some livewire performances. It will be fascinating to see how he adapts to the Premier League.
