Johnny Manziel might not suit up on Saturdays anymore, but he’ll always be an Aggie. During an appearance on Mostly Sports with Mark Titus & Brandon Walker, the legendary Texas A&M quarterback discussed his involvement with the program and his expectations for the Aggies this year.
“I had a good conversation with Marcel Reed this week,” Manziel said. “I’ve been watching some practice film and stuff, trying to give him some pointers that I think could help him out. But, [I’m] excited for [head coach Mike] Elko, the vibe he brings, what he means to the program. He embraces the Aggie Spirit.
“So, expecting better things. I say this every single year, but I feel confident with where we are. We really have some players. He’s done a good job recruiting. So, you know, I’m hoping for the best.”
If Reed can play nearly as well as Manziel did during his time at Texas A&M, the Aggies are in for an exciting year. Manziel amassed 7,820 passing yards and 63 touchdowns during his two seasons as Texas A&M’s full-time starter.
For his efforts, he won the 2012 Heisman Trophy, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award and was named a consensus All-American. While Reed wasn’t putting up Manziel numbers last season, he had a solid campaign after beginning the year as Texas A&M’s backup quarterback.
Reed made eight starts and 11 appearances for Texas A&M last season, tallying 1,864 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, compared to just six interceptions. His arm was far from his only threat. He also amassed 547 yards and seven scores in the ground game.
With Johnny Manziel giving him advice, Reed will look to ramp up his production this fall. After all, Manziel isn’t the only one with high expectations for the Aggies.
Texas A&M posted an 8-5 record last season in head coach Mike Elko’s debut campaign. While the team ultimately had a strong year, they lost four of their final five games of the season. With Manziel and all of the 12th Man behind him, Elko plans on getting Texas A&M back on the right track this fall.
“On the field, we’re really excited to get into year two,” Elko said at SEC Media Days. “I don’t think you can quantify how challenging year one truly is. When you have to go into a place and build everything, build culture, a program, build scheme, build practice habits, build practice tempo, design, everything.
“There’s so much that’s on the table in year one. I think both I and our staff are really excited about the growth that will happen between year one and year two in our program.”
