It's been a very up-and-down season for the Kansas City Royals, sitting with a 58-60 record and in third place in the AL Central going into their Monday matchup against the Washington Nationals.
One bright spot has been 25-year-old shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who unfortunately missed the Royals' Sunday loss against the Minnesota Twins after being left out of the starting lineup due to a stiff back.
Witt Back for Nationals Matchup
Luckily for the Royals, Witt's absence will only last one game, with the team releasing their starting lineup before taking on Washington, showing the shortstop is returning and hitting in the No. 2 hole.

Before the game, Witt's availability was in question, but according to Anne Rogers of MLB, Kansas City's manager Matt Quatraro stated that the shortstop's prep work and hitting before the game were "much better than we could have hoped for."
The Royals are still in the hunt for a wild-card spot, sitting four games behind the 62-56 New York Yankees going into their Monday matchup, and adding an All-Star back into the lineup is a major boost.
Royals Can't Afford to Lose Witt for Any Longer
If the Royals are serious about making a late playoff push, not having Witt in the lineup must be avoided at all costs. Throughout the season, he's easily established himself as one of their best offensive threats.
In 116 games, he's recorded 458 at-bats, 130 hits, 71 runs scored, 17 home runs, 65 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. The shortstop has also slashed .284/.340/.493 with .833 OPS, which ranks second on the team.
With a very winnable three-game series against the 47-70 Nationals, the Royals and Witt are presented with a prime opportunity to chip their way closer to the playoff picture with only 44 games remaining.
