John Mateer has earned a new nickname amid his alleged gambling drama.

Washington State transfer John Mateer is expected to be a star at quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, but the redshirt junior has found himself in hot water just weeks before the start of the college football season.
After exploding in his lone season as the starter at Washington State in 2024, throwing for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns, while also rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores, Mateer entered his name into the portal and followed his offensive coordinator to Norman.
The No. 6 overall transfer in the portal, according to 247Sports, has fans in Oklahoma hoping he can help the program return to the College Football Playoff. However, fans around Norman may be feeling a bit uneasy after Mateer's Venmo transactions from 2022 surfaced, and featured him sending money to another user with the subject line reading "sports gambling."
With the story spreading like wildfire, Mateer took to X with a statement claiming that any notion of him participating in sports gambling are "false." In addition to denying the claims, Mateer revealed that the Venmo messages were "inside jokes" between he and friends.

While Mateer is hoping to put this situation behind him, college football fans have utilized the opportunity to coin a new nickname for him in "Moneyline Mateer."
"My guy Moneyline Mateer free," commented one user.
"Moneyline Mateer incoming," said a second.
"Moneyline Mateer," exclaimed another.
"Moneyline Mateer my savior is here," joked a fourth.
"Moneyline Mateer is a fire nickname," suggested another.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the program is looking into Mateer's Venmo, but if they were to find that he was gambling, he could be facing a suspension.
“If a student-athlete wagers on their own sport at another school, education on sports wagering rules and prevention will be required as a condition of reinstatement, and the loss of 50% of one season of eligibility will be considered.”

There is a lot of investigating left to be done in this situation, but there is now a world where Mateer is punished mid-season for the Sooners. No. 18 Oklahoma opens the year on Aug. 30 against Illinois State.
