In December, South Carolina promoted Mike Shula to offensive coordinator after Dowell Loggains left the Gamecocks to take over at West Virginia. On Tuesday, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer opened up on his relationship with Shula.
“It’s been great,” Beamer said. “The dynamic, first of all, in that staff room is awesome right now with all those coaches. It’s a really good group of people in that room. That staff dynamic with Mike and a couple of new guys we brought in, with Ben Burris and Davis Koetter, it’s just a really good dynamic in there right now. And then Mike’s been awesome.
“The fact that he’s been a head coach before is very helpful. And I can have conversations because he’s been a head coach and not necessarily telling me, sometimes maybe, what do you think about this? But there’s great communication, very transparent, and I know everything that we’re doing and why. Anything that I have an issue with, he’s great about communicating. But it’s been fantastic as well. He’s big time just as a human being, but then just as a coach also.”
Mike Shula served as South Carolina’s senior offensive assistant last season. Thus, the Gamecocks aren’t starting from scratch with a new OC.
After all, South Carolina shouldn’t change too much after averaging 407.8 yards per game last season. Instead, the Gamecocks will look to build on their pre-established momentum, with starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers returning for his redshirt sophomore season.
Sellers was fantastic last season, tallying 2,534 passing yards and 18 touchdowns while only throwing seven interceptions. He also notched 674 yards and seven touchdowns in the ground game.
In total, South Carolina is returning five starters on offense from last season. Shula’s largest task will be replacing running back Rocket Sanders, who was the team’s leading rusher last year.
Utah State transfer RB Rahsul Faison is the favorite to fill the hole left by Sanders. Faison racked up over 1,100 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season. Not to mention, South Carolina will have standout athlete Nyck Harbor at wide receiver.
Simply put, Shula should have no shortage of weapons at his disposal during his first year leading South Carolina’s offense. Beamer is excited to see the offense in action.
South Carolina will kick off its 2025 campaign with a showdown against Virginia Tech on at 3 p.m. ET on Aug. 31. The game will air live on ESPN.
