Villarreal have made a formal bid to Chelsea for Renato Veiga, but it falls short of the Blues’ expectations according to Fabrizio Romano.

Veiga joined Chelsea in a surprise deal worth €14m from Swiss side FC Basel last summer, but after just one season his Stamford Bridge career appears to be over.

The 22-year-old has become a Portugal international since joining Chelsea, but made it clear in January he wanted to leave the club in order to play regular minutes in his preferred centre back position.

Villarreal make offer for Renato Veiga

Veiga joined Italian giants Juventus on loan for the second half of last season, but they haven’t made the move permanent.

The Portuguese wasn’t part of the Chelsea squad for the Club World Cup, and despite Levi Colwill suffering an ACL injury Veiga is still expected to be sold.

There’s interest in the defender, and Veiga saw a move to Atletico Madrid fall through earlier this summer, but there’s a chance he could still move to Spain, and Romano has provided an update.

He took to X.com and said:

“EXCL: Villarreal have sent formal bid to Chelsea for Renato Veiga — it falls short of #CFC expectations.

“Formal contract proposal to Veiga also sent as dream target for centre back position.

“The Portuguese defender is keen on the move but difficult to agree club to club.”

Veiga is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, with Chelsea thought to want a total package of around €40m, which would represent a significant profit.

Chelsea looking to offload Axel Disasi

Veiga isn’t the only defender the Blues are looking to move on, with Disasi also falling into that category, but as of yet no offers have come in for the Frenchman.

Villarreal reportedly explored a move for Disasi earlier this summer, whilst there was believed to be interest from Newcastle before they opted to sign Malick Thiaw.

The latest club to be linked with Disasi are Wolves, and it will be interesting to see where the 27-year-old ends up, and what transfer fee the Blues get.
