Browns' Dorian Thompson-Robinson trade with Eagles gets fun plot twist for DTR amid QB drama

He didn't come to Cleveland that long ago.

The Cleveland Browns drafted Dorian Thompson-Robinson in a similar spot to Shedeur Sanders.

In 2023, DTR was the No. 140 overall pick to Cleveland. That's four spots earlier than Sanders went to the Browns in this year's edition.

Why's that relevant?

Mostly because Thompson-Robinson is no longer with the Browns, who are in the midst of a jumbo quarterback competition.

Cleveland traded DTR and a 2025 fifth-round pick (originally from the Lions) to the Philadelphia Eagles for Kenny Pickett, who was a 2022 first-round pick.

That deal was completed on March 10, before the Browns took either of their current rookie QBs, Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.

It was a chance for Cleveland to acquire a mid-20s quarterback with a solid draft pedigree and a winning NFL record.

Now, the situation gets a fun subplot, as the Browns and Eagles play in Week 2 of the NFL preseason.

DTR is expected to start with both Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee sitting for the Eagles.

Thompson-Robinson, who played collegiately at UCLA, has to prove he belongs in the NFL.

He went 1-4 across two seasons as a Browns starter, throwing just one touchdown compared to 10 interceptions while completing just 52.6% of his passes. DTR did run 35 times for 187 yards (5.3 ypc) across his Browns career.

At times, Thompson-Robinson looked overmatched, even when he had proper preparation time during the week.

Pickett certainly was a good try for the Browns to take, although an injury is currently limiting his chances of winning the Week 1 starting job in Cleveland.

There's a decent chance DTR never really matters for the Eagles, and there's a decent chance Pickett never really matters for the Browns.

But they get a bit of overlap on this mid-August Saturday, a reminder of a QB for QB swap that both teams hope still can help them out down the road.
