Steichen would like to make up his mind "shortly."

One of the major storylines in Colts training camp this summer was the quarterback battle. Both Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones have been going at it to see who can emerge as a frontrunner for the job.

While some indications may suggest neither passer has separated himself from the other, head coach Shane Steichen is getting close to choosing his starter.

“I’m very close,” Steichen said about coming to a final decision. “I’d like to have a decision shortly.”

Ideally, an official announcement would come in the coming days to allow whoever is chosen enough time to use Indy’s final preseason game against the Bengals as a tune-up opportunity, treating the week of preparation like he’s preparing for a regular season contest.

Steichen said he’s going to do what he feels is best for the Colts moving forward, adding he has more clarity now than he did a day ago at this time. That suggests he liked what he saw from one guy more than the other.

The stats for Richardson (6-for-11, 73 yards) and Jones (7-for-11, 101 yards) were relatively similar, but the eye test suggested Richardson was the more exciting of the two. Additionally, he had a long completion to Anthony Gould called back due to AD Mitchell lining up offsides.

Steichen says it’s one of the more difficult choices he’s ever had to make as a coach.

“When they both came in, I made it very clear that this is going to be a battle, they’re going to compete for the job,” he said.

Richardson certainly seems to have the leg up, especially having had more time in the offense than Jones.

“If I win the job, thank God,” Richardson said after the game. “If not, I need to keep working.”
