The Alabama Crimson Tide, who enter the 2025 season ranked No. 8 in both major polls, will reportedly not have one of their top weapons when they travel to face Florida State in the teams’ Aug. 30 season opener.
Senior running back Jam Miller, who rushed for 668 yards and seven touchdowns last season on 145 carries, underwent surgery Saturday after sustaining an injury in a preseason scrimmage.
Second-year Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer announced the surgery Sunday morning, and reports from ESPN and other outlets indicate that Miller is definitely out for the Florida State game.
The injury adds to the inexperience in the Crimson Tide offensive backfield.
Redshirt junior quarterback Ty Simpson, who recently claimed the starting job, has only completed 29 of 50 passes in his college career. And the Tide now are without their top three rushers from one year ago.
Quarterback Jalen Milroe, who actually led the team with 726 yards rushing, has moved on to the NFL. Justice Haynes, who split time with Miller last fall and ran for 448 yards and seven touchdowns, has transferred to Michigan.
That leaves sophomores Richard Young and Daniel Hill and Louisiana transfer Dre Washington as the Tide’s likely top options against Florida State.
Young ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries in 2024, and Hill ran 21 times for 61 yards with one score. Washington finished his final season at Louisiana with 478 yards and five touchdowns on 73 carries.
Florida State, which is coming off of a 2-10 season, is a 13.5-point underdog against the Tide.
