Kenny Pickett arrived in Cleveland this offseason hoping to become the Browns starting quarterback but that will not happen, at least at the start of the season.
Entering Browns training camp, Pickett was viewed by many as the frontrunner but a hamstring injury that he suffered on July 26 ended that opportunity.
This afternoon, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that 40-year-old Joe Flacco will be the Week 1 starter against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although, Flacco, Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders all got snaps in training camp, the job was Flacco’s once Pickett suffered the hamstring injury.
While this is no doubt disappointing for Pickett, it’s just the start of the season and many things can change. It would not be at ball surprising and actually likely that Pickett will get a chance as the starter due to either injury or ineffective play by Flacco.
During minicamp and the start of camp, Pickett impressed Stefanski, Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave with his mobility and accuracy.
