The Washington Commanders are reportedly looking to trade running back Brian Robinson, according to NBC’s Pro Football Talk. Robinson did not play in Monday evening’s preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn was asked about the situation postgame, confirming that both he and general manager Adam Peters had spoken with Robinson to inform him of the team’s intention. He added that there were “a lot of moving parts” and that “news like that’s always not easy.”
Additionally, Quinn said that he met with the team as well. That in mind, it would seem that Robinson’s time with the team is indeed done.
The running back is preparing to enter the final year of his rookie contract and owed a base salary of $3.4 million. If the Commanders can find a trade destination for him, they would still carry dead salary of $212,000 for this season.
Robinson is coming off of a career season, rushing for 799 yards and eight touchdowns. He has reached at least 700 yards in all three years of his NFL career since Washington selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama.
Brian Robinson has overcome a lot early on in his career, including recovering from being shot in August of his rookie season during a carjacking attempt. He still played 12 games that year and ended up with 797 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
We’ll wait and see whether the Commanders can find a deal for the running back before the start of the regular season. But given his talent, he’s sure to command interest from some RB-needy team.
Washington seems to like where the rest of their running back room is. Austin Ekeler is back for a second season with the team after posting 733 yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns last year while the Commanders also have RBs Jeremy McNichols (261 rushing yards, 4 TDs), Chris Rodriguez (173 rushing yards, 2 TDs), and a new rookie in Jacory Croskey-Merritt (Arizona) who they selected in the seventh-round of the 2025 NFL Draft. That supposed comfort could make it easier for the franchise to move on from Robinson Jr., who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract after being a third-round pick by them in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The front office for the Commanders have several things to consider going into this season. That now includes what they want to do in the backfield with Robinson Jr. seemingly available in a deal elsewhere in the league.
