When you think about Army Football, one of the defining traits of the program under Head Coach Jeff Monken and Defensive Coordinator Nate Woody has been a consistently tough and effective defense. Observers often use the phrase “bend but don’t break” to describe their style. But one thing is always certain … when the final whistle blows, opposing offenses walk away knowing they’ve truly been in a battle.

If there’s a player who perfectly embodies that resilience, toughness, and leadership, it’s former safety and two-time team captain Marquel Broughton. A true reflection of what it means to wear the Black and Gold, Broughton set the standard for what an Army defensive player brings to the field—grit, discipline, and a relentless competitive spirit.

He entered West Point from Lawrencevillle, GA in 2019 after playing the 2018 season at USMAPS.

Broughton appeared in nine games during his plebe campaign and had nine tackles (6 solo)

He moved into the starting lineup in 2020, and recorded 67 tackles, including 2.5 TFLs and also recorded 2 INTs, 5 passes Defended, 1 Forced Fumble and a Fumble Recovery.

Broughton joined three seniors from the defense as one of the 4 team captains in 2021. He was the defensive quarterback for the team and finished the season second in total tackles with 80, and 6th in TFLs with 3.0. He tied for the lead in interceptions with 2. He was one of 9 Black Knights to earn a spot on Phil Steele’s All Independent Team.

He served as a team captain again in 2022, and recorded 88 tackles, including 3.5 TFLs and also had 3 INTs, 8 Passed Defended and 2 Forced Fumbles.

His 244 career total tackles are the 8th most by any Army defender since 2000.  He also finished his Army career with seven interceptions, second most by an Army defender since 2000.

The former star safety joined GBK’s Joe Iacono as our next guest in the ‘Where Are They Now’ series.
