The Alabama Crimson Tide have their next starting quarterback set, with Ty Simpson ready to take over that role. Now, as Fall Camp winds down ahead of the 2025 season, he’s been able to go out there and continue to impress offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
In the final scrimmage ahead of the regular season, Simpson was a standout. Afterwards, Grubb broke down the statistical performance that he had. He also explained what it was about that performance that impressed him.
“Ty was, I think, 12 of 15 with two drops,” Ryan Grubb said. “I thought he was very controlled. Distributed the ball right where it was supposed to be. I thought his eyes were in the right spot. I thought he was very disciplined.”
Ty Simpson was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022. In his time at Alabama, he’s primarily been a backup. During that time, he’s completed 29 of 50 pass attempts for 381 yards. He’s also rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
This offseason, Ty Simpson returned to win the quarterback battle at Alabama. He was competing for the job against Austin Mack and Keelon Russell.
“We were trying to put him in some spots in the fringe,” Grubb said. “And stuff like that to see how he would respond and make sure he takes care of the football, keeps us in field goal range, all those things. And I thought he responded really, really well. Had calm demeanor when it was good and bad. There were a couple flows there, we started out really fast again, and did a nice job when we hit a little bit of a lull, I thought he was there to respond.”
During his time as a backup and developing at Alabama, Ty Simpson has had several different coaches. That’s included a change at head coach, as well as multiple changes at offensive coordinator. With that, there’s been plenty of him to learn. Ryan Grubb is the most recent in that line of offensive coordinators to coach Simpson.
“That’s my guy man,” Simpson said. “He came in here and I knew him a little bit when he first got here last year. But you know the whole Seahawks thing happened. But when he came back, he’s been so great. I’ve learned so much ball from him and Coach [Nick] Sheridan. They’ve been in unison when it comes to everything from the routes to the run mesh or whatever. I’ve learned a lot of ball from those guys so I feel like that helps me at the quarterback position. They help me put the team in the best position to win.”
Mike Norvell unpacks how Florida State will prepare for Ty Simpson
Ty Simpson will get his first start on the road against Florida State. There, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell will have a plan for dealing with the signal caller.
“He’s played a little bit, but I mean, you always take a look at any previous experience on a field, and as a high school quarterback, you’ll take a glimpse of that. He’s been in their program for a good while, and he’s developed. I mean, you got a lot of respect for Ty,” Norvell said.
“When I was at Memphis, obviously, his dad was coaching up at UT Martin, a great coach. He’s from a football family. He’s a really good football player, and he’s kind of waited his time for the opportunity. So I’ve got a good sense of how talented he was coming out, and I know they’re really pleased with the way that he’s developed.”
Alabama and Florida State will face off in Tallahassee on August 30th. After that, a road trip to Athens to play Georgia will kickoff SEC play on September 27th.
