One of Rutgers Football’s top contenders for a starting spot on the offensive line will miss the 2025 campaign.

Offensive tackle Ryder Langsdale, who joined the program in the spring from Lafayette, suffered an injury in training camp and will not play this upcoming season, the program announced.

The 6-foot-7, 298-pound tackle was one of five transfer additions on the offensive line for the Scarlet Knights.

Langsdale’s career

A native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Langsdale developed into one of the FCS’s top offensive tackles throughout his tenure with the Leopards, earning FCS All-America Third Team honors in 2023, and All-Patriot League First Team honors by Phil Steele. In all, he started 35 games at Lafayette, all at left tackle protecting the blindside.

Following four years in Easton, Langsdale originally entered the transfer portal during the winter period. He received interest from several Power Four programs, such as Wake Forest, though he was only officially offered by Middle Tennessee State and Old Dominion, among others in the Group of Five. He opted to return to the Leopards following the winter

Following his graduation from the school, Langsdale entered the portal again during the spring period and later committed to the Scarlet Knights in the first week of May.

His commitment represented a homecoming for the Garden State native.

“I was going to games when I was five years old with my friends,” Langsdale said at the start of training camp. “I’ve had a lot of friends and family reach out saying they’re going to be at games, so it’s pretty cool. I’m from New Jersey and spent my whole life here.”

What does the injury mean for Rutgers?

Even after entering the program relatively late in the process, Langsdale was set to compete for the starting left tackle spot.

After losing Hollin Pierce to the NFL, Rutgers was left with a 6-foot-8-sized hole at the position. Langsdale had the size and production at the FCS level to compete for – and potentially win – the spot.

Now, Langsdale will be on the sidelines for the season. However, he will have the option to return in 2026 with a medical redshirt and can battle once again to become the blindside protector next year. No decision has been made in either direction yet.

As for the Scarlet Knights on the field, Langsdale’s injury shrinks the battle for the starting left tackle spot by one. He was battling with multiple pieces at tackle, namely Tyler Needham. Needham now likely becomes the favorite to start, though there is some solid depth and competition alongside him.

The program brought in multiple tackles in the transfer portal, and some returners – such as Dantae Chin and Taj White – got playing experience in 2024 amid injuries along the offensive line. The depth in numbers at tackle gives head coach Greg Schiano plenty of maneuverability with the unit.

“Guys have injected themselves into the picture by playing well,” he said following the team’s second training camp scrimmage. “It probably clouded the picture more, but that’s okay, because it’s a good cloud.”

Losing Langsdale for the season – whether he was set to start or not – takes away a key depth piece for 2025, and also delays his New Jersey homecoming performance.
