Stephen Curry Wants Undrafted Guard Back With the Warriors: Insider

An NBA insider reported that Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry wants Gary Payton II to return to the team.

The Golden State Warriors have yet to make a move in the free agent market. They have dedicated their time and effort to making a contract for restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. The two sides have not agreed on anything yet and are willing to move on from each other.

Aside from Kuminga, however, there are other free agents to whom the Warriors have not paid attention. One of them is undrafted guard Gary Payton II. The 6-foot-2 guard is a fan favorite and wants to re-sign with the team that allowed him to succeed.

However, the contract talks with Kuminga have hindered Payton II from having conversations with the organization.

There is Mutual Interest in Bringing Payton Back

According to NBA insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, All-Star guard Stephen Curry wants the Warriors to bring Payton II back. Given that he's arguably the best player Golden State has ever had, the organization could pay attention to Curry's request.

"Payton II, who played an instrumental role in Golden State’s 2022 championship run, also wants to return. The mutual interest is there. And when Curry co-signs it, the conversation shifts from possibility to priority," Robinson wrote.

Before finding a haven with the Warriors, Payton II bounced around the league, playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards. The son of former NBA player Gary Payton played a significant role in the Golden State's 2022 championship run. His defensive tenacity was a perfect fit for Curry's offensive game.

Even though he's undersized, Payton II isn't a liability on the defensive end, as he can match up against anyone on the court.
