Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark Update Draws Attention With 9 Games Remaining

The Indiana Fever shared a Caitlin Clark update.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has now missed 13 straight games due to a right groin injury. This is the third soft tissue injury Clark has sustained in her second WNBA season, as she has also missed time with injuries to her left quad and left groin.

At 19-16, Indiana has nine regular season games remaining and is battling for a spot in the playoffs. This record is good for the sixth seed, but sits just two losses better than the ninth seed LA Sparks.

In her 13 appearances this season, Clark has averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.8 assists. While her scoring numbers are down from last season when she won the Rookie of the Year award, Clark's production could elevate a Fever team looking to make consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since 2016.

Indiana Fever Have Been Urged to Shut Caitlin Clark Down

As Indiana ensures Clark is 100% healthy before allowing her to return, calls have mounted for the Fever to end her season. With just nine games remaining, speculation has grown about the possibility of this.

This idea generated a lot of attention on Aug. 9 when Meghan L. Hall of USA TODAY urged the Fever to shut down Clark, also asking the same for Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky.

"People may not like this answer, but for the health of both, I’m in favor of shutting them down," she said. "Do not risk that. Work towards next season. I don’t want either one of them rushed back. Straight up. Seen way too many folks injured this season, including several big stars."

While the Fever have been vague in their Clark updates, which has seemingly left open the possibility of her not returning this season, the team shared an update this weekend that caught the attention of fans. After many noticed Clark was not in attendance for Indiana's road game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, the team shared a statement on the reason for her absence.

"The Fever said Clark's absence Sunday was to continue rehab as she ramps up a potential return to the court," Brian Haenchen of the Indianapolis Star relayed.

This caught the attention of fans for more reasons than one. Some fixated on the team noting Clark is ramping up, while others took notice of the word "potential" being used to describe the possibility of her returning this season.

WNBA Fans Unsure What to Make of Fever's Caitlin Clark Update

Given the recent calls for Indiana to shut Clark down, fans are unsure what to make of this update from the team.

"That last two words though... potential return," said one. "Its not for certain she will return. I think she should sit the rest of the season out. It sucks but why not just let her rest the remainder and come back with rage next year?"

One fan shared a different perspective, stating, "I think this means she will be back soon. I think the 'potential return' just means there could be setbacks like with any injury. I think she’ll be back for Friday’s game but this could just be my wishful thinking."

Another added, "Crazy that you have take little nuggets of what they release and decipher what it means. It’s like a Taylor Swift numerology clue."
