As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, we'll take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. They have a ton of cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well.
Leading up to the season, we will be counting down the top 30 most important players on the roster. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to what they'll offer in 2025, and tackle the most pressing questions surrounding them this coming year.
Next up on the countdown is Spencer Brown.
Background
Position: Offensive tackle
Age at start of season: 27
Experience: Fifth year
2025 cap hit: $8,181,000
2024 recap
Right tackle Spencer Brown became one of the stars of the Bills in the past year as he has transcended into one of the best right tackles in the game. He has been healthy over the past two years and it has made a big difference, for the 2021 third-rounder. Prior to the 2024 season, he was rewarded with a four-year, $72 million extension (top-ten paid RT). He backed it up with another stellar year as he ranked 14th among all NFL tackles in PFF run blocking grade (78.5).
2025 outlook
Brown began training camp on the PUP list due to lingering back pain from previous injuries but was able to be cleared to return a couple weeks ago. Head coach Sean McDermott called it a "flare-up" and added, "just getting in the right spot so we can calm down and [Brown] can push forward here." It sounds like a precautionary move to protect the wear and tear of one of the team's most valuable pieces. He'll be relied upon again in 2025 to show his agility on the offensive line, pulling to give the backs some running lanes and also anchoring down to protect Josh Allen in the pocket.
Biggest question: Can Brown cut down on penalties?
Assuming his back is good to go for the season, the biggest question will be if he can attract less flags in 2025. It's the one main area that he could improve on. He averaged one flag per game in 2024, playing in 15 games and committing 15 penalties. He finished with the second-most penalties by an offensive linemen in the NFL. His counterpart, Dion Dawkins, recorded the third-most. In an offense that scored over 30 points per game last year, they could be even more efficient in 2025 if they have fewer penalties that back them up.
