Jefferson's cross country teams made their debut under new coach Josh Ludwick by take a first place and a second in the Milan Puddle Jumpers meet.
MILAN – Jefferson’s cross country teams have a new coach for the first time in a quarter century.
Josh Ludwick has taken over for Phil Speare, who coached the Bears for the past 24 years.
The new coach made his debut memorable Monroe, guiding Jefferson’s boys to the Division 2-3-4 championship of the Milan Puddle Jumpers Invitational.
The girls took second place, but had the individual winner in Claire Miller. The sophomore covered the course in 20:35.44.
The boys scored 28 points to easily outdistance runner-up Flat Rock (56). Milan was third with 75 and Summerfield fifth with 126.
“Both sides are really young so this was a great showing,” Ludwick said. “I'm really proud of them since most of them put in a great summer.”
Jefferson ran 3-4-8-9-21 with Mason Tulik, Carter Lee, Jonah Busen, Luke Masserant and Orion Galloway.
Jacob Stanislawski of Flat Rock was the individual winner in 16:50.05 with teammate Calvin Haydamacker fifth.
Milan’s Mason Martin took second place. Brayden Ost was 18th for Summerfield.
Miller was supported by Jessie Cole (11), Kinsley Wilburn (12) and Randee Mulherin (13).
The Milan do of Amerie Wilson and Kaily McDaniel took second and third, respectively.
Summerfield had four runners in the top 10 – Makenzie Wolfe (5), Allison Ost (6), Grace Raymond (8) and Abby Raymond (9) – but did not have enough runners to qualify for the team competition.
MONDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BOYS SOCCER
Brady McBride, Flat Rock: Accumulated 5 goals and an assist to spark a 7-3 win over St. Mary Catholic Central. Mac Mlotha (1 goal, 3 assists), Cyrus Rollins (1 goal, 1 assist), Zachariah Marama (2 assists) and David Knezovich (1 assist) also contributed to the offense.
Jaxon Bolster, Ida: Racked up five goals and an assist in an 8-0 victory over Onsted. Dane Holycross added two goals and Thomas Dollison added the first of his varsity career. Other assists went to Weston Allen and Max Nadeau.
VOLLEYBALL
Bailey Spradling, Whiteford: Finished with 7 kills and 10 digs in a 25-14, 25-14, 25-17 victory over Blissfield. Maylie Mullins added 5 kills and 13 digs and Addeson Cousino was credited with 20 assists.
GIRLS GOLF
Nora Kinsey and Lauren Tolliver, SMCC: Both shot 45 during a 190-249 win over Milan. Gracelyn Carter added a 49.
Brea Olmstead, Summerfield: Took second place individually with a round of 101 to help the Bulldogs finish second as a team in the Tecumseh Invitational. Courtney Cribbs (112) and Payton Koraleski (118) also played well.
SATURDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
SOCCER
Luke Bishop, Dundee: Netted a hat trick to lead the Vikings to an 8-2 win over Stockbridge. John Trejo added two goals and Mason Cousino, Nick Oliver and Leeland Scott each had one.
Ian Petrick, New Boston Huron: Scored the 102nd goal of his career to tie the Monroe County Region record held by Zach Cepo during an 8-0 win over Jefferson. Jackson Vallie made 18 saves and Josh Hargreaves did a good job of marking Petrick for Jefferson (2-2).
Fred Brown, Milan: Scored both Milan goals in a 2-2 tie against Airport.
BOYS TENNIS
Andrew Biederman, Milan: Was the consolation champion at No. 3 singles in the Midland Tournament. Zach Weathers-Will Kliber (No. 3 doubles) also placed third and Milan was fourth as a team.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Afton Presley, Mary Kate Wayne, Sara Mitchell and Kelsie Gillay, Milan: Took second place in the medley relay at the Battle Creek Lakeview Spartan Relays. Mitchell, Lila Mckenna, Evelyn Gill and Pressly were third in the breaststroke relay.
Vanessa Neace, Sydney Clark, Riley Chevalier, and Aileen McNamara, Flat Rock: Won the kickstart relay in the Riverview Rockin’ Relays. The 200 freestyle (Liz Sparks, Cindy Tracy, Ashlin Woodman, Chevalier) and the individual medley (Chevalier, Neace, McNamara) relays took second.
