Detroit Lions add linemen Tyler Lacy, Tyrus Wheat, still have one open roster spot

The Lions did not lose any player they cut at Tuesday's roster deadline to a waiver claim from another team

The Detroit Lions filled two of the open spots on their roster through waivers Wednesday, Aug. 27, claiming defensive linemen Tyler Lacy and Tyrus Wheat from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys.

Lacy, a fourth-round pick in 2023, started eight games at defensive tackle for the Jaguars last season and had two tackles for loss. Wheat, who signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2023, appeared in eight games and had 14 tackles for the Cowboys in 2024.

The Lions, who did not have anyone claimed on waivers, entered Wednesday with three open spots on their 53-man roster and created a fourth when they traded wide receiver Tim Patrick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

The Lions plan to sign ex-Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas once he passes his physical and will have one roster opening entering Week 1 of the regular season.

Lacy and Wheat add depth to one of the Lions' thinnest positions. The Lions kept nine defensive linemen at roster cutdown, with Roy Lopez, Pat O'Connor, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Mekhi Wingo and Chris Smith backing up starters Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, DJ Reader and Tyleik Williams.

Injured defensive linemen Alim McNeill and Josh Paschal are expected back later in the year.

The Lions also started formulating their practice squad Wednesday, re-signing veterans Tom Kennedy and Trystan Colon to the 16-player unit.

They are expected to re-sign several more of their own players who cleared waivers.
