Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is adjusting to life as a backup.

The 23-year-old will not be the Colts’ opening day starter for a third year running as that title belongs to newly-minted captain Daniel Jones. But that doesn’t mean he won’t see the field at all in 2025.

In speaking to the media on Thursday, Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen didn’t rule out the possibility of using Richardson as a short-yardage quarterback. First, he wants Richardson to get fully situated.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I want to make sure he crushes his new role and takes it in stride, and does a hell of a job there. So, we’ll see.”

It’s an interesting comment from Steichen, who refused to use Richardson in such a fashion during the two weeks he was benched for Joe Flacco last season. He remains adamant that it’s a new year, meaning a new approach.

“Every year is different,” he said. “Like I said, I want him to crush his new role, be a pro every day, come into the building, work, and we’ll see where it goes.”

The Colts have been clear that they’re not giving up on Richardson, and this decision is in alignment with their message that he’s not at all finished in Indianapolis.

Ultimately, time will be the ultimate determining factor in whether or not Richardson is used in a  specialty role.
