Rookie cornerback Korie Black, a seventh-round pick the New York Giants waived on Wednesday in the hopes he would return to the practice squad, has instead signed with the New York Jets practice squad.
The Giants waived Black to make room for waiver claims Beau Brade and Rico Payton, but expected that they would be able to pass Black through waivers and get him to the practice squad.
Once a player goes unclaimed in waivers, he is a free agent. Thus, there is always risk of losing a player when a team makes a move like this.
This is a bit of payback from the Jets, although it is a different front office and coaching staff than Gang Green had in 2022. That year, the Jets tried to pass a young safety they were hoping to keep, Jason Pinnock, through waivers.
Pinnock played three seasons for the Giants, starting 37 games. He started all 32 games he played in over the last two seasons before signing with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency during the offseason.
Black is the first of 31 draft picks by GM Joe Schoen over four seasons to be cut as a rookie. 2022 draft picks Marcus McKethan and Darrian Beavers spent their rookie seasons on IR.
