Newcastle United announced on Wednesday that Matt Targett has joined Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 29-year-old left-back has made 47 appearances for Newcastle since his arrival from Aston Villa in 2022. After a series of injury setbacks, Targett has opted for a move to the Championship in search of regular playing time, something that wasn’t a guarantee to come his way throughout the 2025-26 season in Tyneside, even with a schedule packed full of games for the first half of the Magpies’ season.
Middlesbrough, managed by Rob Edwards, have made a perfect start to the season, winning all three of their opening league fixtures. They currently sit second in the Championship table as they look to mount a promotion challenge. Meanwhile, Newcastle has one point of six possible in their first two games of the Premier League campaign.
NUFC wished Targett well during his time at the Riverside Stadium in their official statement announcing the loan deal just ahead of the game against Leeds on Saturday.
