Bears QB Caleb Williams reacts to recent harsh criticism

A national media member recently suggested Ben Johnson wasn't happy with Caleb Williams and the Bears QB wasn't having it.

Ever since he became the quarterback of the Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams has said he doesn't feel pressure and isn't worried about the outside noise when it comes to criticism. That doesn't mean he won't react when someone in the media has a take that is so outlandish and comes out of nowhere.

Earlier this week, FS1's Jason McIntyre filled in for Colin Cowherd on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" and had a lot to say about Williams and the Bears. McIntyre has taken aim at Williams previously this offseason but doubled down by insinuating head coach Ben Johnson wasn't happy with his performance and amplified a take that he could be benched this year. All while playing the hits about the Bears not having a 4,000-yard passer in their history, Williams taking too many sacks, watching film alone, etc.

Predictably, the clip was panned almost immediately. Johnson is coaching Williams hard, but there's no reason to suggest he isn't happy with how the quarterback is progressing. And the benching comment came from a question to The Athletic's Dan Wiederer while appearing on 670 The Score's "Rahimi & Harris Show" earlier in the week. Wiederer gave a blanket answer, saying anything is possible depending on how the Bears start and what Williams looks like in regard to a possible benching. McIntyre took that to mean the Bears might consider benching Williams, which threw Bears fans into a fit on social media.

Eventually, the news got to Williams, and he had a subtle response to the criticism. On Thursday, Williams reposted a post on X/Twitter from @Rut23KC that read, "POV: you're about to hear the dumbest [expletive] you've ever heard in your life," with a photo of McIntyre.

Clearly, the message got to Williams and was received, though he deleted the repost after a few hours. Williams has heard it all this offseason, and those outside of the building are putting plenty of pressure on him to succeed in Year 2.

Though his rookie season was tumultuous, Williams still set the Bears' rookie record for passing yards and passing touchdowns. His 3,541 passing yards were the fifth-most for a Bears quarterback in a single season, and he became the first player in team history to pass for at least 3,500 yards, 20 touchdowns, and fewer than 10 interceptions. Certain people like to believe he had one of the worst seasons for a rookie in recent memory, when it's very much the opposite.

Williams says this type of criticism doesn't bother him as he works to become the best quarterback he can be. That doesn't mean he won't take a moment out of his day to respond to some of it, and we now know his true feelings on McIntyre's comments.
