Going into the season opener against Western Michigan, the Spartans will face the dreaded issue of injuries, with seven players out for tonight’s game.
Senior Nikai Martinez was limited throughout fall camp, and his ability to play tonight was expected to be a game-time decision. Martinez started all 12 games at safety last season and ranked third on the team with 51 tackles, while also tying for second on the team with two interceptions. With an undisclosed injury, the Spartan’s returning defensive back starter will sit out for tonight’s game.
The special teams injuries will be a huge test to the Spartans throughout the match-up, as two of their kickers, Tarik Ahmetbasic and Martin Connington, will be out. This leads Michigan State to use its third-string kicker, Blake Sislo. Sislo is a fifth year senior who has not yet seen game action at the collegiate level.
The green and white will also lose some crucial depth with defensive back Andrew Brinson IV, long snapper Kaden Schickel, tight end Brennan Parachek, and defensive lineman Jalen Satchell all out.
