Amid the Celtics’ quest to win back-to-back championships, star forward Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks. Because of the severity of the injury and lengthy recovery process, doubt has surrounded Boston’s chances as contenders heading into the 2025-26 season.
Two years removed from their last championship, the Celtics have also parted ways with several core players. Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday were traded, while longtime center Al Horford is no longer with the team. As a result, Boston is widely expected to be less competitive this season.
Still, the Celtics are coming off a 61-21 campaign and retain All-Star Jaylen Brown and guard Derrick White, giving them a strong chance to remain a playoff team in a weaker Eastern Conference.
If Boston can reach the postseason, fans have reason for optimism about Tatum’s return.
Marc Bertrand and Scott Zolak of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak and Bertrand” show recently shared encouraging news after having dinner with Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla.
“The Celtics are very happy with how hard Jayson Tatum has been working at his rehab, and his level of focus and intensity in the rehab process,” Bertrand said.
“Tatum did not leave town. He has been here the entire time. … Since the injury, he has not left town and he has been inside the building at the Celtics’ facility with their people and their team almost every single day for months.”
Although the postseason remains months away, the Celtics can take comfort in Tatum’s progress, discipline and determination to get back on the court. If Boston remains in contention when he returns, the ceiling for this team could be far higher than expected.
