Mendoza’s odds have risen in the hours since the game.
Indiana football quarterback Fernando Mendoza has emerged as an early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy following the Hoosiers’ 63-10 win over Illinois on Saturday night, having the shortest odds at +800 on FanDuel Sportsbook as of Sunday morning.
Mendoza had a massive game against the Fighting Illini, completing 21 of his 23 attempts through the air for 267 yards and five touchdowns. Those five scores went to four different receivers, with Elijah Sarratt recording two.
Mendoza transferred to Indiana this past offseason after spending the previous three seasons at California, redshirting as a freshman in 2022. He was drawn to join the program by the staff’s success working with quarterbacks and the presence of his younger brother, Alberto Mendoza, on the roster.
He’s been the subject of some NFL Draft buzz throughout the offseason, with some projecting him as a first round selection, that will likely only increase throughout the regular season.
