What is FSU's Micahi Danzy's ceiling? 'One of the greatest receivers to touch the grass'

After scoring three touchdowns in three games in his first year at wide receiver, here's FSU football's speedster Micahi Danzy's ceiling.

Florida State football might have found its breakout star in Micahi Danzy.

After stepping up in the starting role in place of Squirrel White, the Tallahassee native exploded with two big vertical passes in the Sept. 20th victory against Kent State at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Danzy finished with two catches for 112 yards. His one and only rush of 64 yards and touchdown score was on Gus Malzahn's signature reverse play. After Week 4, the former running back turned wide receiver has three rushing TDs in three games. He will also have 299 all-purpose yards on nine possessions.

While he was unavailable to talk about his performance after the game, head coach Mike Norvell and his teammates spoke highly of the Florida High grad.

I'm very, very pleased with his progress," Norvell said.

"Another young man that — every day, you feel his desire, his want-to, the practice habits, the push. You can see the confidence just growing with every play that he gets. Yes, to have three, four touchdowns here already in this season, a lot of explosive plays, but that's a big play that you can look at and say, man, that's — yes, his speed got him behind, but the play-making ability is what finished the catch. To see him —we had a couple of those in fall camp, and you're seeing a young man that's growing and developing kind of right here before our eyes."

Norvell also said Danzy broke the rock after the game. He also credited wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. for developing him as he continues to improve on his route-running abilities. As he continues to prosper in a new position that he is still adjusting to, his stock continues to rise whenever the ball is in his hands.

"It's 100 percent because of his work, and I think Coach Harris is doing a great job with him," Norvell said.

"You can see that tonight. Squirrel was out, and it was an open door of opportunity for Micahi to show that he was ready for even more. I think that the two vertical passes were big for him, but then also whenever he got the ball in his hand on the reverse, he did what he's been doing. So it was good to see that it was big."

Micahi Danzy's performance 'not a surprise' to former high school coach

Florida High head coach Jarrod Hickman, is not shocked by Danzy's electric start. Hickman watched first hand when Danzy was rated one of the top athletes in the country.

In 2022, during Florida High's last championship run, the then-junior produced 2,134 all-purpose yards. With his level of talent, Hick expects Danzy to keep thriving at the wide receiver spot.

"As far as Micahi, not a surprise. He’s not only been super talented, but he’s always been a big-time competitor with a great work ethic," Hickman told the Tallahassee Democrat.

"Smart football player as well and very versatile, and I think this is just a beginning. He will continue to improve as a wide receiver, and he’s always been electric with the ball in his hands."

Danzy was also an all-state sprinter and a two-time state champ in the 200-meter and 400-meter. In 2024, he was Big Bend's Sprinter of the Year and a member of the All-Big Bend team for football and track and field.

Danzy is only just getting started.

The freshman All-American sprinter has all the tools to become another premier weapon FSU has ever seen. Cornerback Jerry Wilson spoke from a defensive standpoint about how impactful Danzy has been, just facing him every day. While everyone marveled at his world-class speed, he didn't overshadow the skillful use of his hands.

"His ceiling is one of the greatest receivers to touch the grass, and I'm not kidding," Wilson said.

"This dude is the fastest, most explosive player I've ever seen. But you wouldn't, it makes you overlook how strong his hands are. I mean, like I see him every day working on his hands after practice. He's going to do over-the-shoulder catches, doing all this extra stuff. So, you just know he's going to go in the game and compete and go make plays because he puts the work in on top of having a crazy [game.] So, it's like I love seeing him ball, man. It's fun."

For quarterback Tommy Castellanos, he is thrilled with the progress that Danzy has been making since rejoining the team full-time after track season was over. He recalled hardly seeing him because he was unavailable during the spring. Still, knowing what he is capable of, he continues to create chemistry with the true sophomore as FSU moves forward to ACC play when the Seminoles face Virginia on Friday at 7 p.m.

"I remember when I first got here, he wasn't really around much because he was in track. Basically, you think you got weapons now, just wait until Micahi comes from track," Castellanos said.

"Just being able to just be with him and be around him and teach him all…because usually last two weeks, you just think he's going to get the ball on the in-route, and now he's been able to run the whole entire offense, so like I said, him continue to progress and you know get better week in week out it's going to be it's going to be super exciting."
