Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes that club legend Thomas Müller can still have a second career with the team in management.

"It is the wish of the fans and the club that former players take on leadership roles at Bayern Munich," the supervisory board member told dpa in an interview on the occasion of his 70th birthday on Thursday.

Müller, 36, played for Bayern for 25 years before his contract expired this summer. He wasn't offered a new deal and decided to continue his playing career in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps.

Rummenigge believes that the 2014 World Cup champion made the right decision.

"I think Thomas did the right thing. He is gaining new experiences in North America, broadening his horizons, perfecting another language, and getting to know a new culture. He could prepare himself there to some extent for a possible job afterwards," he said.

First, however, it is crucial to know what Müller actually wants to do after his playing career.

"He has to be keen on this completely new challenge. He has played football at the highest level, which would undoubtedly help him. And he knows the club inside out. But it's also clear that a position on the board or as a manager is a completely different job from being on the pitch," Rummenigge stressed.
