Bengals head coach Zac Taylor: "We've faced three challenging defenses early in the season. You can't make any excuse for that."
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor answered questions from reporters Sept. 22, one day after a 48-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the most lopsided defeat in team history.
"As a unit, we've got to be better in the run game," Taylor said. "We have to do a great job identifying the scheme that we've got a lot of confidence in to be able to give the running backs opportunity, and our guys need to step up and do a great job with that scheme. I think it's unfair to put it on a player. It's on all of us offensively, collectively, to find a better answer. We've faced three challenging defenses early in the season. You can't make any excuse for that. We've got to find our way to put pressure on them. And stop saying it's about the defense. There's got to be moments where we attack the defense and put them on their heels. We've just got to find some momentum in drives and yesterday we were far from finding momentum on drives."
Taylor was asked about the team's lack of physicality.
"It's hard to explain," Taylor said. "You don't want to have to explain that. … We've talked to everybody about that up front. Again, whenever you talk about protection and physicality in the run game, you immediately think of just the offensive line. That's everybody involved. That's the backs, that's the tight ends, that's the receivers … that's play-calling marrying things together. So you can't tee off on people. Make one phase of the offense difficult. So we all play a hand in that. There's not one person or one position group you're going to point to. We've all got to own that and be better at that moving forward."
Injured quarterback Joe Burrow was back with the Bengals, three days after undergoing surgery to repair his turf-toe injury.
