We received a few injury updates on Detroit Lions edge rusher Marcus Davenport, who is dealing with an unspecified chest injury.

Davenport sustained the injury in Week 2 and was placed on injured reserve on Monday, the Lions announced. That means Davenport will miss at least the next four games.

The Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night will count as the first of four. The next three contests after that are against the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Marcus Davenport injury update

Shortly after the Lions placed Davenport on injured reserve, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the veteran is dealing with a strained pectoral muscle.

Rapoport adds that Davenport should be back quickly after his IR stint.

"The Lions have placed pass-rusher Marcus Davenport on Injured Reserve with a pec strain. He's out four games, but should be back quickly after that," Rapoport wrote.

When is Marcus Davenport coming back?

If Davenport only needs the minimum stay on IR and is activated right away, he will return for the Week 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Lions have a bye in Week 8, so if Davenport doesn't return for the Bucs game, the next contest he'll be eligible to suit up in is in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Why it matters

The Lions are now extremely short along the edge, as Aidan Hutchinson and Al-Quadin Muhammad are the only edge rushers left on the 53-man roster. Muhammad will start in place of Davenport.

Detroit is going to have to make a move to add more depth, but that could come in the form of simply promoting Andre Carter from the practice squad after Week 3.

We know the Lions need more than that, but the team continues to show a lack of urgency at the position, something that has been the case all year long.
