2025 NFL Power Rankings, Week 4: Jets Stink Again

The New York Jets are sinking fast

The New York Jets lost another game on Sunday. After taking a late lead on a Will McDonald blocked kick and return for a touchdown, the Jets defense was unable to stop the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from driving for the winning score as time ran out. The Jets are now 0-3, and any post-season hopes for this team are rapidly fading while the calendar still says it’s September. Such is the life of a Jets fan.

How did the power rankings feel about this tough loss for the Jets? Let’s find out.

24) New York Jets

Despite entering Week 3 without Justin Fields, the New York Jets more than held their own against a similarly injury-ravaged Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad. A blocked field goal turned into a touchdown late in the game, giving them a chance to win. However, the defense didn’t hold up their end of the bargain, leading to a 29-27 loss. New York will try to bounce back next week with Fields hopefully back under center.

28. New York Jets (0–3)

Last week’s ranking: No. 26
Last week’s result: lost to Buccaneers, 29–27
This week: at Miami

I am going to challenge the notion that Sunday’s Buccaneers loss was foundational in some way, shape or form. Effort, in the free agent era, is no longer solely dependent on the creation of a culture. But I do think that taking a “hot hand” approach at quarterback when Justin Fields is healthy would be truly damaging to the culture here and symptomatic of a bygone era of incompetence.

Week 3 result: Lost to the Buccaneers 29-27
Week 3 ranking: 25

Biggest issue on defense: Zero takeaways this season

The Jets are one of only three teams without a takeaway. (Miami and Washington are the others.) This is surprising, considering how much they pressure the quarterback. They lack playmakers in the secondary, as cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Brandon Stephens aren’t ball hawks, with just five career interceptions in 119 combined games. The dearth of takeaways puts a lot of pressure on the offense, which could use the benefit of a short field on occasion.

USA Today

27. New York Jets (0-3)

WR Garrett Wilson ranks among the NFL leaders with 21 receptions. No other NYJ wideout has managed even five catches.

It has been a tough start to the Aaron Glenn era for the Jets, but turning around this team will take time. The power rankings for this week range from a high of 24 to a low of 28.

With the obvious proviso that power rankings are stupid, unless they praise the Jets, in which case they’re awesome, what do you think? Where should the Jets rank in the NFL power rankings?
