Tyrone Tracy dislocated his shoulder in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs. He's expected to miss extended time. What will NY Giants will do to replace him?
EAST RUTHERFORD - New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy suffered a dislocated shoulder after taking a hit at the end of a catch-and-run in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tracy was down on the Kansas City sideline and Giants medical staffers checked on him before the second-year pro made his way off the field in obvious pain, favoring his right shoulder.
The Giants are 0-3 for the third time in the last six years and they will go for their first win of the season Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers, who are 3-0 as one of six remaining undefeated teams in the NFL.
Tyrone Tracy injury update
Giants coach Brian Daboll indicated Tracy was undergoing further testing and evaluation Monday, but the belief is he will miss extended time for an injury that typically requires a minimum of a four-week recovery given the physical nature of the position.
Tracy had rushed 22 times for 68 yards in two-plus games so far this year. He also caught eight passes for 54 yards.
Because of that, the Giants could wind up placing the 25-year-old on injured reserve. He would be eligible to return after a minimum of four weeks.
Tracy emerged as a key player on the Giants as a rookie last year.
Along with his 839 yards on the ground, Tracy also added 284 receiving yards, which gave him 1,123 total yards from scrimmage. Tracy and wide receiver Malik Nabers became just the third rookie duo in NFL history to each have 1,000+ yards from scrimmage.
Cam Skattebo: How Tyrone Tracy's absence impacts rookie
Giants rookie sensation Cam Skattebo had already emerged as a co-leader of the backfield when Tracy was healthy, so expect even more from the fourth-round pick from Arizona State.
Skattebo had 120 total yards and a touchdown on 16 touches against Kansas City. He has scored twice in the last two games, and both his personality and his physicality has proven to be an undeniable spark for the Giants, albeit in a losing effort.
How will Giants replace Tyrone Tracy?
Skattebo is a given, and there will be more on his plate. Veteran Devin Singletary should also be asked to step up and contribute more, especially as a change of pace for the rookie.
The Giants could promote exciting second-year pro Dante "Turbo" Miller from the practice squad. He had a strong preseason and lost out to a numbers' game at final cuts in late August.
Miller has shown great burst - hence the nickname - and was a weapon in the screen game in the preseason. He also has value on special teams. The Giants could use three practice squad elevations for Miller over the next three weeks if they need the active roster spot at another position, but either way, Miller should be in their plans as well.
