Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders and his son, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, miss each other more than most would know.

Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders and his son, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, used to walk the sidelines together during their playing days. Their conversations became a fixture of pregame broadcasts. Coach Prime made personnel decisions, promoting Pat Shurmur to full-time offensive coordinator mid-season to instill a pro-style offense, for one, to appease Shedeur.
Now, Deion hasn’t known who’s even taking Shedeur’s starting spot under center, let alone who could ever do those same sideline strolls. It took four games for Coach Prime to figure out who his best QB in the post-Shedeur era was.
The “Grown QB,” meanwhile, is getting his reps on the scout team. He sounds happy, but a competitor who was breaking records and making the University of Colorado Boulder nationally relevant a year ago isn’t truly satisfied with being behind Dillon Gabriel and a 40-year-old Joe Flacco on the depth chart.
The two each shared a sad message about being apart that Coach Prime revealed on Jason and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast.
"I know you miss me," Deion said.
"No, I know you miss me,” Shedeur quipped back.
The truth? They dearly miss each other to the fullest. Things may never be as good for the two of them professionally as they were in 2024.
Coach Prime may eventually get the NIL buy-in from CU AD Rick George to reel in a QB as talented as Shedeur, but helping family win will always be the most important thing for the proud father.
Shedeur went to the most QB-needy franchise in the NFL and can’t get real reps in practice. He may never get a better shot than the one he has now, one that he’s seeing no career growth with.
That seemingly innocuous interaction between Coach Prime and his son is tragic when put through those lenses.
