This isn't an ideal outcome.

The New England Patriots are a player short after Tuesday's transaction window.

The New York Jets signed linebacker Mark Robinson off the Patriots' practice squad, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Robinson will be key for the Jets, who have linebacker Quincy Williams heading to Injured Reserve.

It's a bit of a bummer for the Pats, who had promoted Robinson for all three games of the season so far to be on the gameday roster. He has three total tackles through three games.

Robinson played 38 games over the past three seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Part of the reason this timing makes sense for Robinson is those three promotions. After a player has been called up three times, the only way to get onto the gameday roster is to earn a full contract on the 53-man roster.

The Patriots could've made it clear that they weren't yet going to do that with Robinson, or maybe there was at least some uncertainty.

An active roster contract with the Jets will keep him above the practice squad and on the regular 53 for as long as he's with New York.

Losing Williams is a big blow to the Jets. The brother of DT star Quinnen, Quincy has grown into a great linebacker.

Robinson won't make up for that absence, but at least he'll add depth in a key spot. The Patriots will have to look elsewhere to replenish their own LB depth.
