We give our grades for the Jets performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Jets suffered another gut wrenching loss on Sunday, this time to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 29-27. They took the lead late on a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown by Will McDonald. But, the defense failed to make one last stop and the Bucs won on a Chase McLaughlin field goal as time expired. The loss moves the Jets to 0-3 as they now prepare to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 4.
Here is Jets Wire's report card from the Jets loss to the Buccaneers:
Passing Offense: C
On the surface, Tyrod Taylor’s numbers weren’t bad as he was 26 for 36, 197 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. But, it took way too long for the passing game to get going and most of those numbers were in the fourth quarter. Eventually, the Jets are going to have to find another weapon besides Garrett Wilson. GW had another strong game but it's only a matter of time before teams figure out ways to neutralize him and force the Jets to rely on other options. And, for all the hate the fans and beat writers have for Allen Lazard, he caught a massive touchdown when the team needed it.
Rushing Offense: C-
It's time to start worrying about Breece Hall as he had another bad game on the ground with only 21 yards on nine carries. Tyrod Taylor led the team with 48 yards on eight carries and when the quarterback is the top rusher, it's a bad day all around. Braelon Allen had some nice runs averaging five yards a carry and it may be time to consider giving him a bigger role. The offensive line has really regressed since the Pittsburgh game and if this rushing attack is going to succeed, the boys up front need to start playing better.
Passing Defense: C-
Baker Mayfield wasn’t overly impressive in this game but he carved up the Jets secondary on the final drive of the game. The pass rush struggled only managing one sack and that was from Quincy Williams and Harrison Phillips combined. Sauce Gardner did not have a great day and committed a questionable pass interference penalty on a third and 29 that extended a drive for the Bucs. Micheal Clemons committed another bad penalty that led to a field goal and If I never see him in a Jets uniform again, it’ll be too soon.
Rushing Defense: B-
While the Buccaneers barely got over 100 yards rushing as a team, neither running back was very effective. Bucky Irving only averaged 2.6 yards a carry while Rachaad White only averaged 2.4 yards a carry. Outside of Mayfield’s 33 yard scramble, the run defense held up pretty well and has performed better than expected thanks to the acquisitions of Phillips and Jowon Briggs.
Special Teams: A
Even though the Jets lost, Will McDonald's blocked field goal for a touchdown was the play of the game. Outside of the Xavier Gipson fumble against the Steelers, the Jets special teams has been a very strong unit. Nick Folk made two more field goals and remains perfect on the season. Isaiah Davis and Braelon Allen did a nice job returning kicks, averaging close to 30 yards a return. It’s just a shame that such an incredible play by McDonald to give the Jets the lead was completely wasted by the defense.
Coaching: C-
Aaron Glenn's team has shown plenty of fight in the first three games of the season, but the same bad habits (Slow starts, bad tackling, undisciplined play) continue to doom this team. It's a bit dumbfounding what Aaron Glenn sees in Clemons. He's a walking personal foul penalty who contributes next to nothing on defense. It's tough to justify his place on the roster at this point and Glenn needs to seriously think about cutting him.
The offense was brutal until the second half. The Jets need to stop settling for field goals and Tanner Engstrand has to start figuring out ways to get the ball to receivers not named Garrett Wilson. He needs to start getting the tight ends more involved and Braelon Allen's physical running style may be a better fit for this offense than Breece Hall.
The defense lacks a real killer instinct and while it's fair to throw some blame on Steve Wilks, the players need to execute also when a win is within their grasp. It's pretty laughable and embarrassing that this defense has not forced a turnover in any of their three games this season.
The Jets had a tough start to the schedule and while they're 0-3, there are things to like about this team. But, these last second losses are tiresome and frustrating to watch. They have two winnable games coming up against the Dolphins in Miami and at home against the Dallas Cowboys. It's time for the Jets to back up their talk and start playing complete games for their head coach so we can be treated to Aaron Glenn dancing on the sidelines more often.
