Game Thread #158: Milwaukee Brewers (95-62) @ San Diego Padres (86-71)

Brewers look to even series

There are still five games left in the regular season, and Milwaukee is just one win away from tying the franchise record for most wins in a season (96 in both 2011 and 2018). The Brewers’ magic number is just three to clinch the No. 1 seed in the National League, which would also give them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Unfortunately, Milwaukee still has what seems like half of its pitching staff on the IL. Trevor Megill, DL Hall, Brandon Woodruff, Logan Henderson, Shelby Miller, and Jose Quintana are all out with various injuries. So, with the NLDS less than two weeks away, LHP Bruce Zimmermann (great last name) has been tabbed to make his debut with Milwaukee.

The 30-year-old Zimmermann has an ERA of 5.57 over 38 career appearances, all with the Baltimore Orioles. He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2023, when he had a 4.73 ERA over seven relief appearances, but was signed by the Brewers as a minor league free agent after the 2024 season. Zimmermann went 10-7 with a 4.11 ERA in 28 appearances at Triple-A Nashville this season. RHP Randy Vasquez (3.94 ERA through 25 starts this year) will start tonight’s game for San Diego.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy is sticking with the same top half of the lineup as yesterday (Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras, and Sal Frelick). Caleb Durbin moves up to the six-spot after a two-hit day yesterday. Rounding out the order is Jake Bauers (playing first tonight), Blake Perkins (in center), and Joey Ortiz.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 pm. Tonight’s game will be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
