AC Milan and Inter Milan have confirmed that world-renowned architects Foster + Partners and MANICA will design the new San Siro Stadium.

This comes after Inter president Giuseppe Marotta called for the iconic stadium to be torn down and rebuilt for Milan to avoid falling behind in the modern football landscape.

Both clubs recently reached an agreement to purchase the San Siro site, which includes the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, as they look to build a new state-of-the-art venue.

The deal is still subject to approval from the city council, but once they get the green light, the two firms will start working on a new venue that the Milan clubs believe will set new standards.

The city council is expected to respond by the end of this month.  Reports claim that the plan is to demolish 90% of the current San Siro structure to make way for the new stadium.

The project is part of Milan’s urban regeneration project that covers approximately 281,000 square meters and focuses on sustainability and innovation.

The new stadium is expected to house 71,500 fans. It will feature two large tiers with an incline designed to guarantee excellent visibility from every section.

It will also meet the highest accessibility standards, making sure that every supporter can enjoy the matchday experience without burning a hole in their pocket.

The joint statement read: “AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano announce that they have signed an agreement with the architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA, led respectively by Lord Norman Foster and David Manica.

“If the resolution for the sale of the Great Urban Function San Siro is approved by the Milan City Council, the two firms would be responsible for designing the new Milan stadium.

“This significant step in the development of the future stadium represents a strategic investment for the future and a tangible sign of commitment to the city of Milan, its history, and its cultural, architectural, and sporting heritage.

“The start of activities, including the initial concept design and preliminary project phases, will be subject to the completion of the acquisition of the Great Urban Function San Siro by the Clubs.”
