The right guy was on the mound tonight
Game Summary
As the Cardinals eliminated the Giants last night, the Giants returned the favor tonight. In reality, the Cardinals were undone by their own bevy of mistakes, more than anything. The Giants take the game 4-3 to avoid a series sweep and send the Cardinals to Chicago to play 3 meaningless games.
Line-up (and roster) machinations
- Noot, Scott, Walker in the outfield.
- Arenado, Saggese, Donovan and Burleson on infield.
- Pages and Gray are the battery today.
- Brubaker goes for the Giants. Walking tall.
- Mets lose. Marlines lose. Reds lose. Hmmm.
The Game Details
T1 – Donovan 4-3. Herrera K. Burleson 4-3.
B1 – K. 3u. K. Good start for Gray.
T2 – Arenado L5. Nootbaar K. Saggesse 5-3.
B2 – K. Double. RBI double. Walk. 3u. Walk. 5-4 ends the uprising. Giants up 1-0. On that RBI double, it appeared to be a harmless flyball to left center, but it looked like neither Scott nor Nootbaar got a good jump and definitely neither was particularly interested in aggressively try to catch it, so it fell in between. I got it, no you take it. Scott’s everyday defensive play has really deteriorated this month. I assume he is mentally exhausted.
T3 – Pages K. Walker L8 (105 mph). Scott singles. Doubles machine Donovan does it again, doubling in Scott. Herrera singles in Donovan. Burly out 4-3. Cards now up 2-1.
B3 – The lead disappears quick as a hiccup. Devers splashes one into SF Bay on a 3-0 pitch to start the inning. 6-3. Double. K. 3-1 ends that inning. Tied 2-2.
T4 – Arenado 5-3. Nootbaar walks. Saggese singles. WP advances both runners, setting up a nice inning. Pages K’s. Walker F8.
B4 – Walker, still thinking about his AB, fails to catch a fly ball, for a 2-base error. It just kind of clanked off his glove. Too many defensive hijinks in the outfield tonight. 4-3 advances the runner, following by a SacFly. Why can’t the Cardinals do this? Single. K. Giants now up 3-2.
T5 – Seymour in for Brubaker. Scott K’s. Donovan 4-3. Herrera walks. Burleson lines out to SS.
B5 – Single. K. Caught stealing. Single. 1-4-3 ends the inning. Gray at 85 pitches.
T6 – Arenado out 4-3. Nootbaar with a backwards K. Saggese called out on an automatic strike for not being ready by 8 seconds. It is a crowded and close race tonight for bonehead play of the day tonight.
B6 – Gray back out. F8. 3-1. E-3 (dropped throw) on an easy ground ball extends the inning. A K ends the inning. Gray 6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 KK. Quality start. 99 pitches. That might be a season high for him.
T7 – Pages out 6-3. Walker K’s. Scott 3-1.
B7 – Leahy in for Gray. K. Soft L3. Single. Another single. K. Giants still up 3-2.
T8 – Gage in for Seymour. Donovan K. Herrera singles (112 mph). Burleson doubles (105 mph). Butto in for Gage. Arenado with a game tying SacFly. Nootbaar walks. Saggese K’s. Now tied 3-3.
B8 – O’Brien in for Leahy. Bloop single. 3u advances the runner. Scott turns a single into an RBI triple to Knizner with an ill-advised dive attempt. 1-3 keeps the runner at third. IBB Devers. 5-4 closes the inning.
T9 – Pages singles. Walker GIDP. Tough night for him. Tough season for him. Fermin out attempting to bunt. Giants win 3-2.
Post-Game Notes
- A comment about Gray. He wasn’t dominating tonight but pitched well. Better than his line. His fielders really hurt him tonight, but he did a yeoman’s job not letting the game get away.
- By the way, Gray reaches the 200 K mark for the season.
- Cardinals fly to Chicago right after this game. They expect to arrive after sun-up tomorrow morning. Thank goodness for the day off.
- The Springfield Cardinals maul Midland to win the International League Championship Series 2-1. Well done.
