No. 2 Texas sweeps Vanderbilt in SEC opener

The Horns recorded their fourth straight sweep to remain undefeated.

The No. 2 Texas Longhorns opened up conference play hosting the Vanderbilt Commodores, continuing their undefeated start to the 2025 season and moving to 9-0 by sweeping the Commodores in forceful fashion, the fourth straight sweep for the Horns.

The Longhorns held the Commodores to a hitting percentage of .153 while hitting over .400 for their third straight match — the .446 hitting percentage was the second highest of the season for Texas. Junior outside hitter Torrey Stafford recorded her 900th career kill, leading Texas with 10, freshman outside hitter Abby Vander Wal added 10 kills, and the 36 assists by sophomore setter Rella Binney set a career high in her first career start.

In the first set, Texas jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Longhorns dominated the set with a hitting percentage of .565 with 16 kills as Binney recorded 15 assists in the 25-13 win.

As the second set started, the Commodores were able to get things going, gaining a 5-3 lead, but a 4-0 Texas run changed the tide and the Longhorns did not look back. Stafford led Texas with seven kills while the Dores offense was held to a .118 hitting percentage. The Commodores made a valiant effort to get within five points late in the set, but the Longhorns closed the second set out accompanied by 10 more assists from Binney, 25-18.

The third set was the closest of the night,  25-21. Vander Wal recorded 5 of her 10 kills in the final set, but it remained close because the Texas attack committed six of its 11 errors for the match in the third set.

The Longhorns were consistently dominate throughout the match, which only had three ties and two lead changes.

Texas faces No. 21 Missouri on Friday at 8 p.m. central for the eighth top-25 match of the season.
