Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hails Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich-like style of play

Bringing sexy back.

Bayern Munich is flying high under second-year head coach Vincent Kompany…and the bosses can’t seem to stop highlighting the contrasts.

This time former chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge took to comparing Kompany to past Bayern greats, who put on a show and won with flair. Read between the lines for the exception — or, you know, in the lines. It’s right there.

“Louis van Gaal managed that [playing attractive football]. Or Čik Čajkovski, under whom we were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1965. And our current coach, Vincent Kompany, also fits into this category,” Rummenigge said in comments captured by Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “Because we had a difficult time with Thomas Tuchel, and that period wasn’t very successful either. In 2023, we didn’t win the title on our own merits; Dortmund squandered or gave away the title, depending on how you want to put it.

“With Vinnie, the enjoyment has returned, as you can see from the style of play, which is entertaining. With him, we are back at a level where you can say: ‘That’s FC Bayern-like When I go to the stadium, I just want to watch good matches. Ideally, I also want to see a successful FC Bayern. What’s often forgotten is that football is a game and should be fun. Football isn’t just about winning. In the end, it’s not just the final score that matters, but the quality of the game itself.”

Well — the winning doesn’t hurt. But if you’re going to play ugly and pragmatic at Bayern, you’d better win. And Tuchel did not.
