FSU vs. Miami has produced some historic football games between these two bitter rivals

A look back at the games when Florida State, Miami were both ranked in the top 10

Florida State and Miami are good at the same time. Top-10 good. Through the coaching changes and adapting to the transfer portal and NIL (name, imagine and likeness) world, the Seminoles and Hurricanes are back on a collision course.

Finally.

Miami (4-0) is off this weekend after beating Florida on Sept. 20 and is ranked No. 2. Florida State (3-0) entered Friday night’s game at Virginia ranked No. 8.

If the Seminoles remain in the top 10, their Oct. 4 game against Miami will be the first with both teams in the top 10 since, gulp, 2013.

Here is a look at Florida State-Miami all-time top-10 match-ups:

1987: Miami 26, Florida State 25

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 3, Florida State No. 4.

Date/location: Oct. 3, 1987/Tallahassee.

Game details: Miami trailed 19-3 in the third quarter, but rallied to take a 26-19 lead on Steve Walsh touchdown passes of 49 (to running back Melvin Bratton), 26 (to receiver Michael Irvin) and 73 (to Irvin) yards. With 42 seconds remaining, FSU’s Danny McManus threw an 18-yard touchdown to receiver Ron Lewis. FSU went for the two-point conversion, but McManus’ pass to Pat Carter was incomplete. FSU lost despite outgaining Miami 426-306, but kicker Derek Schmidt missed field goals of 29 and 31 yards and one point-after attempt.

Quote: “I had predetermined before the game that we would go for the tie in this situation. I sent Derek out there. Then I got to think, ‘He’s already missed three (kicks). What if misses again?’” — FSU coach Bobby Bowden.

1988: Miami 31, Florida State 0

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 6, Florida State No. 1.

Date/location: Sept. 3, 1988/Miami.

Game details: FSU was a 4-point road favorite, but left with its first shutout loss since 1976 (Miami 47-0). The Hurricanes scored two second-quarter touchdowns and had six takeaways.

Quote: “Are there any questions to ask about the Canes now? (FSU) wanted to beat us for all the wrong reasons. They talked about revenge (and) unfinished business. That’s why they never had a chance.” — Miami cornerback Donnie Ellis.

1989: Florida State 24, Miami 10

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 2, Florida State No. 9.

Date/location: Oct. 28, 1989/Tallahassee.

Game details: Florida State forced six turnovers and the offense rolled up 354 yards against Miami’s top-ranked defense. Trailing 14-10, Miami running back Shannon Crowell fumbled at the 1-yard line. The Seminoles put the game away with a 12-play, 99-yard drive after the takeaway.

Quote: “(FSU’s) defense won the ballgame for us. I wouldn’t have guessed it. I would have said the running game or the passing game. But the defense won it.” — Bowden.

Final rankings: Miami No. 1 (11-1, national champions in coaches’ poll; Colorado won the media’ poll), Florida State No. 3 (10-2).

1990: Miami 31, Florida State 22

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 9, Florida State No. 7.

Date/location: Oct. 6, 1990/Miami.

Game details: The Hurricanes rushed for 334 yards, overcame two turnovers and 11 penalties and led 24-0 less than halfway through the second quarter. Fullback Stephen McGuire rushed 31 times for 178 yards and running back Leonard Conley 16 times for 144 yards.

Quote: “We lost it in the first dad-gum quarter. I’ve never seen a Florida State team so unpoised. We were completely shaken.” — Bowden.

1991: Miami 17, Florida State 16

Date/location: Nov. 16, 1991/Tallahassee.

Game details: Wide Right I. FSU kicker Gerry Thomas’ 34-yard field goal was wide right with 25 seconds remaining. Thomas’ 20-yard field goal with 14:22 remaining staked FSU to a 16-7 lead, but a 45-yard field goal with 9:48 left and 1-yard touchdown run with 3:10 left propelled the Hurricanes.

Quote: “It was the toughest and most rewarding win I’ve had.” — Miami quarterback Gino Torretta.

1992: Miami 19, Florida State 16

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 2, Florida State No. 3.

Date/location: Oct. 3, 1992/Miami.

Game details: Wide Right II. FSU kicker Dan Mowrey’s 39-yard field goal was no good as time expired. FSU’s Tamarick Vanover started the game with a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown. Mowrey broke a 10-10 halftime tie with field goals of 38 and 41 yards, but Miami scored the final nine points on Torretta’s 33-yard touchdown pass and a safety when FSU punt returner Corey Sawyer attempted an illegal forward pass from the end zone.

1993: Florida State 28, Miami 10

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 3, Florida State No. 1.

Date/location: Oct. 9, 1993/Tallahassee.

Game details: On its way to the first national championship of the Bowden Era, FSU took the lead for good on quarterback Charlie Ward’s 72-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Ward was 21 of 31 for 256 yards and FSU gained 450 yards offense.

Quote: “This takes a lot off the burden of what happened the last two years.” — Ward.

1996: Florida State 34, Miami 16

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 6, Florida State No. 3.

Date/location: Oct. 12, 1996/Miami.

Game details: The Seminoles scored 17 points in the game’s first 10:48 on Scott Bentley’s 48-yard field goal, Shevin Smith’s 54-yard fumble return and Warrick Dunn’s 80-yard touchdown run. Miami climbed to within 20-16 at halftime, but that was it for its offense. Dunn rushed 22 times for 163 yards and FSU defense posted six sacks.

2000: Miami 27, Florida State 24

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 7, Florida State No. 1.

Date/location: Oct. 7, 2000/Miami.

Game details: Wide Right III. FSU kicker Matt Munyon missed a 49-yard field goal as time expired. Miami’s winning score was a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ken Dorsey to tight end Jeremy Shockey with 46 seconds remaining. Dorsey was 27 of 42 for 328 yards.

Quote: “Today was payback. Put that in your pipe and take your (rear-ends) back to Tallahassee.” — Miami receiver Andre King.

2002: Miami 28, Florida State 27

Date/location: Oct. 12, 2002/Miami.

Game details: Wide Left I. FSU kicker Xavier Feitia missed a 43-yard field goal, extending Miami’s winning streak to 28 consecutive games. Down 27-14 after Greg Jones’ 11-yard touchdown with 11:44 left, Miami rallied on receiver Kevin Beard’s 2-yard touchdown catch and running back Jason Geathers’ 11-yard touchdown run.

Quote: “This is the toughest loss ever. It’s like going to the dealer and buying a $30,000 car and then you turn your back to give them the money and somebody steals your car. You worked hard for that money and somebody just took it.” — FSU cornerback Stanford Samuels.

2003: Miami 22, Florida State 14

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 5, Florida State No. 4.

Date/location: Oct. 11, 2003/Tallahassee.

Game details: The game was played in rainy weather and both teams had five turnovers apiece. But Miami, a seven-point underdog, outscored Florida State 16-7 off takeaways. All of the Hurricanes’ points came off FSU miscues, including a field goals after a blocked punt and recovered shanked kickoff. Miami led 19-0 at halftime.

Quote: “Playing with passion and speed, this is the first time this season we actually played like Hurricanes.” – Miami linebacker D.J. Williams.

2004: Miami 16, Florida State 10 (OT)

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 5, Florida State No. 4.

Date/location: Sept. 10, 2004/Miami.

Game details: Hurricane Frances delayed the game by four days and was played on a Friday night. Miami beat Florida State for the sixth consecutive time and it was the first overtime game in the rivalry. UM forced overtime with quarterback Brock Berlin’s 30-yard touchdown pass to receiver Sinorice Moss with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. In overtime, after FSU quarterback Chris Rix’s fumble, running back Frank Gore scored on an 18-yard touchdown run.

2013: Florida State 41, Miami 14

Rankings entering game: Miami No. 7, Florida State No. 3.

Date/location: Nov. 2, 2013/Tallahassee.

Game details: FSU never trailed and freshman quarterback Jameis Winston overcame two interceptions to throw for 325 yards and one touchdown. The Seminoles outgained Miami 517-275.
