Europe dominated the morning foursomes matches on the first day of the Ryder Cup. Can the U.S. come up with a lineup to bounce back in the afternoon?
The United States Ryder Cup team has a lot of ground to make up in Friday afternoon's fourball matches at the Bethpage State Park Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
That's because Europe stormed past the U.S. 3-1 in the morning foursomes matches, the second Ryder Cup in a row in which they've dominated the first sessions of the Ryder Cup.
The only point the U.S. salvaged came in the final match, when Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay defeated Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre 2-up. Schauffele and Cantlay lost a 2-up lead, then won the final two holes.
Europe won all four matches in 2023 in Rome. The U.S. came back to win 1.5 points in fourballs but never recovered and lost 16.5-11.5.
Of greater concern to U.S. captain Keegan Bradley had to be the lopsided nature of the morning matches. All three of Europe's victories were over before the groups reached the 16th hole, and Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood routed Collin Morikawa and Harris English 5 and 4.
World No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler lost with Russell Henley, 5 and 3, to Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick. Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas won the first hole against Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, but little went right after that in a 4 and 3 loss.
Europe needs only 11 points from the remaining 24 matches to retain the Ryder Cup.
