As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Team U.S.A. is looking to reclaim the Ryder Cup crown this weekend after a loss to Team Europe during the 2023 tournament, with a huge crowd expected to turn out in support of the Americans.
This decision to attend the 2025 Ryder Cup marks the first time Trump has attended a professional golf match since August 2023, during a LIV Golf tournament, according to Fox News.
Additionally, Trump has now become the first sitting President in U.S. history to attend this prestigious tournament, adding to a long list of sports events that the President has attended during his time in office, as reported by USA Today.
Trump’s arrival at Bethpage Black comes shortly after Team Europe took an early 3-1 lead over Team U.S.A., with the duo of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay being the only Americans to pick up a victory during the Friday Foursomes.
Team U.S.A. Captain Keegan Bradley acknowledged the slow start by the Americans, noting that the tournament will have “ebbs and flows” throughout, but said the arrival of the President should boost their performance.
“Well, we just had the President fly over in his Air Force One, so I’ve got a feeling things are going to turn here,” he said, per Golf Magic.
Shortly after arriving at the course, Trump joked that he decided to attend on Friday after hearing that Team U.S.A. struggled in the opening portion of the tournament.
“The team is not doing so well. So when I heard that, I said ‘Let’s go on the plane, we have to try and help them!’,” he said, according to Fox News.
Prior to the tournament, multiple members of Team U.S.A. expressed excitement about the opportunity to golf in front of Trump.
“To have the President here, it’s been a tough few weeks for our country with some of the stuff that’s been going on, and to have our President here and for us to represent the United States of America, albeit being in a golf tournament, is extremely important for us, and we’re excited to be on home soil with the home crowd, and we’re ready to get this tournament started,” said Scottie Scheffler, per Fox News.
Similarly, Bryson DeChambeau, who has a well-documented relationship with Trump, said he believes the President can help “inspire” Team U.S.A. to claim victory over Team Europe.
“I think he’ll be a great force for us to get a lot of people on our side. It will be interesting and exciting to see how the crowd and everybody reacts. It’s going to be an electric environment,” he added, as reported by The Guardian.
Although Team U.S.A. has struggled to start the tournament, there are still three days for this group to bounce back and prevent a back-to-back victory by Team Europe.
