"And some plays it looks beautiful, but then other plays, especially running plays, you can wish you had a different formation.”
Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones just can’t help himself. All he had to do was not douse the fire with gasoline this week, as defensive end Micah Parsons is set to turn to Dallas for a revenge game against the team that refused to pay him a fair deal after four years of service with the Cowboys.
Instead of keeping his mouth shut, Jerry did what Jerry does best: step in it in front of a hot mic.
On the radio in North Texas with 1053 The Fan on Friday, here’s what Jerry had to say about his team facing off against Parsons on Sunday:
He can be disruptive, but we have huge amounts of experience with the anecdotes that we’ve seen used on us for the last four years. And while he does make great players, there is also a way to approach playing against Micah, as we know, because we didn’t exactly win the Super Bowl during those years. So, bottom line is, when I look at playing him, I think of trying to have him as an advantage when we were playing other teams over the last four years. And some plays it looks beautiful, but then other plays, especially running plays, you can wish you had a different formation.
So far, the Green Bay Packers have the number-one-ranked defense in DVOA through three games. Their defense has only allowed 14 points per game this year, the best mark in the NFL. Per NFL Pro, the Packers’ “Cheetah” formation, which is how they get three defensive ends — Parsons, Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness — together on the field at the same time, has given up just 1.5 yards per play this year.
On the ground, the Packers have given up just 193 rushing yards on the season, the third-best mark in the league. They also give up just 3.2 yards per carry in the run game, again the third-best mark in the NFL.
Good luck to Jerry’s Cowboys and their banged-up offensive line in running against this defense. They’ll need it. I’m not seeing the weakness that Jones apparently does.
